Ok so i see this subpage on a lot of sites, and lets be honest most of their 'tips' are utter bollox. So heres MY tips on how to get some traffic to your site.
Firstly, one word...Time, yup thats right don't start your site on monday and expect to be getting 200 hits a day by friday, most sites dont become popular over night! Ok so with the 'instant popularity' idea out of your head consider the following...

Topsites lists
They do send me alot of hits, but thats because i get a lot of votes so im high up on them, so go ahead and join them but again remember it takes time, you cant expect to get one vote a month and get 1000 hits out a month.

Signing Guestbooks
Yes this does actually work, but you know the drill...sign it with a proper entry that shows you have browsed the site and chances are the person will come sign your book in return, then you'll also find other people who see your entry will visit too. The minute your guestbook entries look copy and pasted and say "cool site, check out mine" you can forget it, people wont visit your site because your clearly a moron just out for hits!

Boards/UBBs/Forums
Post on them, its a great way to get people visiting your site! Now i dont mean sign up just to plug your site at every available oppertunity and do nothing else, i mean join, become an active member, make friends and become part of the board. Most peoples hits come from friends who have linked them, again i say this takes time.

Content and design
Expage sites just wont cut it here. Some of the most popular sites i know dont have amazing designs...but awesome content, some of the most popular sites i know dont have any content...but amazing designs. This is why again it comes down to time...you cant expect to be a great webdesigner when you have only been doing it for two weeks, can you? To put all that more simply...Your website will not become popular in a week, become an active member of the 'community' and the hits will start flowing in from all kinds of places...so...have patience!

If you dont have time and patience, get a webcam, get your tits out and contact Internet gossip and tell them you have sex with horses.
