post Category: Offline, Online post postApril 5, 2007

Good day Swaymyway fans.

I have 3 items for this entry, the first comes in the form of a request.

1. Plugins for wordpress…I suck at searching for them, well not so much suck at searching for them but I find that the thing I want…there’s either zero plugins for it, or there’s a 100 and then I waste 5 hours installing a bunch trying to find one that works/I like best etc. So can anyone just save me a bunch of hassle and just tell me where I can get that one that adds a maths question to the comment field…and can anyone tell me if such a plugin exists that will allow people to subscribe to categories (they can subscribe to as many or as few as they like, and will get an email when a new post is added in that category). Much thanks to anyone who can oblige.

I am also looking for a sort of ‘Ask’ script, it will be used so that people can make requests and they, along with my response, will be posted on the site and dated…so if anyone can hook me up with a good wp plugin, or ask script (the one I use won’t do as it’s not dated), or even a guestbook script etc…that would be spiffy.

The second comes in the form of a minuscule rant, because I don’t actually care enough for a well thought out or long rant.

2. Nooooooooooooo Naked CSS Day (said in a Geordie accent a la Michelle Bass BB5), I am already bored of seeing these ‘naked’ sites and I have only been online for an hour. What’s the point? seriously….from the site:

“The idea behind this event is to promote Web Standards. Plain and simple. This includes proper use of (x)html, semantic markup, a good hierarchy structure, and of course, a good ‘ol play on words. It’s time to show off your (body).”

Translated the idea behind this event is for web snobs to be snobbish and show off that they know how to do proper code. How does making your site look fugly for the day promote proper code? it doesn’t, it may make people aware…but promote? No. Here’s a better idea, write a blog entry saying you use proper code, extol the virtues of doing so and offer to help anyone who is interested in validating their sites. That promotes it and your visitors don’t have to put up with your site looking like a piece of crap in the meantime. *

The third and final item for this entry, since I have nothing else to really talk about…is

3. ‘My Desk’ - where, unsurprisingly I will be posting pictures of my desk and new surrounding shelves and telling you what’s what, now that’s interesting, right?

Top shelf: Left to right.
Photo of Gav and I at home / Photo of Gav and I at my brothers wedding / Pink spiral vase that has a heart balloon in it / Candle / Gap that has nothing on it yet / Expanding file thing - nothing in it atm as it was only bought Tuesday / 3 x pink magazine files - also empty as bought Tuesday / Box file - contains bank statements and receipts etc / Blue mesh hanging storage thing - contains teddy bears.

Bottom shelf: Left to right.
DVDs that contain burned stuff / Blank DVDs and CDs / Red nose / Webcam / Box that contains various wires and chargers / 2 x empty DVD cases / 3 x Sims expansions / Diary / Cellotape & dispenser / Mobile phone / Nintendo DS & case / Care Bear / Blue drawers - Contains jewellery & Pills / PG Tips Monkey / Red drawers - Contains eBay things (proof of postage, recorded delivery slips, ‘business’ cards) & Sim card packs / CD rack / Hair straighteners / Silver tin - currently empty / Phone

Desk: Left to right.
‘Things’ tin - contains pens, scissors, post it notes etc / Old mouse mat / Infrared dongle / Cup of tea / Left Speaker / keyboard / Monitor / Bagpuss / Mouse mat / Mouse / Right Speaker / Mouse dock / Lamps on off switch (lamp is behind monitor) / Pin board / Plug socket.

And I think that’s pretty much it.

* Don’t go getting offended, I still love you even if you are a websnob, mmkey?

Sorry, can’t help you with WP, I tried it a few times and couldn’t stand it lol but I’ve seen what you are talking about with the math problems at the end but I’d have no idea where to tell you to go te get them, good luck hunting :)

Pink :) Shelves are nice and I want them but there’s nothing to put there.
I’m also annoyed with Naked CSS day because I feel so dizzy looking at the font Times New Roman which is ugly :P Did You Pass Math? is the plugin for the maths thing and it’s found at http://www.herod.net/dypm

I saw you already got a link for a math question plugin, but here’s another one to check out just in case: http://sw-guide.de/wordpress/math-comment-spam-protection-plugin/

I’ve only seen one Naked CSS site so far. I thought it was a cool idea, but still don’t really see the point of it.

I love your whole desk area! And it’s so organized. Makes me want to buy lots of boxes to stuff things in.

For emails, there’s this:

Though people have to register to your wordpress in order to specify categories, I’m not sure how keen you are on that

Wow, great shelves. Now I’m all jealous :-P
I agree! I went to one of my favorite tutorial sites and it was stripped of its CSS! I’m like what the crap! I couldn’t find anything because the whole layout was screwed. *angry*

I’m a boring old cutenews user, so I don’t really know ’bout WP. Good luck though!

Also thanks for the comment on my site, and you stole my word from my post! FUGLY!

(just kidding lol)

Have a great day!! :D

haha Starlet :D Naked day sucked. All the web snobs forever go on about how wonderful CSS is, yet they have this day where they don’t use it just to prove you don’t need it .. or something? huh?
Your pink walls are fantastic!

Wow. You are so organized! I wish I could be like that. Only, if I do, my “secrets” would be revealed to anyone who enters my room. Haha. LOL. About getting naked, I didn’t do it. It will suck bigtime if I did.

You CLEARLY didn’t get the point of CSS Naked Day. It is not about promoting css, it’s about promoting semantic code - that’s html, not css. Its to show that sites can work completely well without needing css.

If you don’t know what something is, don’t complain about it. Just makes you look like an ass.

Evvie

Speaking of making people look like an ass…anonymous comments do that, too. If you’d left a URL or email address with that comment I would have responded. But since you don’t have the courage to stand by your own damn view point I don’t want to waste time responding. Come back, leave your details, I will respond :)

I didn’t want it to turn into some lame sitewar thing so I didn’t leave my details. It’s nothing to do with courage - I left my name an’all and I’m traceable (there aren’t many Evvie’s around). I just thought it damn funny that you thought that this was about ’snobs’ - and really, how does coding properly make you a snob? - when its nothing to do with that kinda thing.

Seriously, I am not 12…some of my favourite online blogs and friends took part in this…I am not about to start hating them and stop visiting their sites, different strokes for different folks…no lame sitewar would ensue. It’s always been my ‘policy’ to not get into a debate with people who leave anonymous comments (I might as well have an argument with a brick wall) - I ask them to post again with details, and if they don’t, I ignore them. So that’s what I will do here also…if you want to discuss/get a serious response from me about it post again with details, if you just wanted to call me an ass and make yourself look like a twat then continue to post anonymously or just drop it now as you’ve already achieved that goal ;)

I adore your desk! *wants a corner desk* Total love, I tell you. Ahh I haven’t seen a naked site but that would drive me crazy. I agree with you - blogging about proper coding would be a much better promotion. What I don’t get is someone saying that it has nothing to do with CSS when the name on the site is actually “CSS Naked Day” - if you’re removing the CSS then it has something to do with it, yes? Anyhoo I just wanted to let you know that, since I read your entry, I knew that you weren’t serious talking about ’snobs’ and that you were in fact able to grasp the extremely simple idea behind the event. I’m in total agreement that removing the CSS from a site does nothing to promote proper coding… it just makes a site look like it’s been coded by someone just learning HTML.

I actually enjoy Naked CSS and other such things… I think this is because I’m sick of bloated code the crashes my browser and the like. But I agree that it doesn’t really promote anything, because I think most people who participate are visited by others who participate as well, and the rest of the people just end of feeling pissed at the plainness.

You can check my site under Visitor>PHP Scripts for the old posed.org script. So many ppl wondered where that went after it disappeared and I still have the original. =) It works great because I still use it!
